☕️Cup of Ambition: Is your boss a narcissist?

Hi, I’m Kelly. Former HR leader turned Career Strategist with a love of Diet Coke, Dolly Parton, and iced coffee. I believe that who you are will always be more important than any job title, and a successful career is a strategic marketing campaign that puts you in control of your brand.

9 to 5 Dilemma
"I think my boss is a narcissist. I’ve been in my role for three years. I like the work, I like my team, and I’ve consistently delivered strong results. But no matter how hard I work, or how much I contribute, none of it seems to stick unless my boss benefits directly from it.
They constantly take credit for my ideas in meetings, they shift blame when things go wrong, and they go out of their way to spotlight people who fawn over them or agree with everything they say (even when they’re clearly wrong).
I’ve tried speaking up more. I’ve tried managing up. I’ve tried keeping my head down. Nothing seems to move the needle. The only people I see getting promoted are the ones who play into their ego or play the political game.
It’s draining. And honestly, it’s making me question myself.
So… how do you navigate this kind of dynamic without burning out?
How do you stay visible and grow when your boss is the bottleneck and you know they’ll never advocate for you unless you start performing loyalty instead of doing great work?”
If you’ve ever had a boss who made you second-guess your instincts, downplayed your achievements, or made everything about them—you’re not alone.
These dynamics are more common than most people talk about, and they can quietly chip away at your confidence and career growth over time.
Maybe your ideas only seem to matter when your manager repeats them. Maybe they celebrate others publicly but never acknowledge your work. Maybe you’re doing great on paper… but still being told you “lack polish,” or “need to work on executive presence.” (Translation: you're not playing the game.)
You start to wonder:
Am I overreacting?
Do they just have a strong personality?
Should I be trying harder to manage up?
But deep down, you know: this isn’t about feedback, it’s about control.
And when narcissistic leadership is in play, the rules change. You can’t just work harder or be quieter and hope to get noticed.
You need to build visibility and protection outside of that dynamic.
Here’s What Narcissistic Bosses Often Do:
Claim your work as their own
Undermine your confidence while praising others publicly
Gatekeep promotions or opportunities
Only reward those who flatter, not those who deliver
In systems like these, waiting quietly to be noticed is a losing game. So what do you do?
Strategy Shift: Stop Relying on Gatekeepers
Whether the system is rigged by egos, your job is to make yourself visible and hard to erase.
Here’s How to Start Taking Up Space Again:
Document Your Impact Keep a private record of your wins. 🏅
Quantify your contributions. This isn’t just for job searching—it’s protection.Share Strategically : 🌼
Find opportunities to present your work or share updates cross-functionally. When you widen your audience, you reduce the power of a single gatekeeper.Strengthen Your LinkedIn Presence :💻️
Narcissistic bosses may hoard internal credit, but external visibility is yours to build. Keep your profile up to date. Highlight results. Use clear, searchable language.
Use Self-Advocacy as Armor: 🪖
Learn to say:
“Here’s what I’ve been working on, here’s the result, and here’s why it matters.”
Not as a performance. As a boundary.
Stay Ready 🏃♀️
Toxic leadership often leads to sudden reorgs, instability, or burnout. Keep your materials fresh so if you need to move, you're not starting from scratch.
You don’t need to feed someone’s ego to survive.
You need to see yourself clearly, and make it easy for others to see you, too.
Because in narcissistic environments, visibility is safety.
And long-term? It’s power.

The Core Skills You’ll Need for 2030 — and How to Start Building Them Now
The future of work isn’t a distant vision anymore—2030 is less than five years away. 😱
And while the roles, tools, and industries may shift, the biggest signal from reports like the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs is clear:

The most in-demand skills aren’t just technical—they’re human, strategic, and adaptable.
What I’m Seeing Right Now
In coaching sessions, hiring conversations, and leadership teams I support, the same themes keep surfacing:
Adaptability is everything. Companies want people who can pivot quickly and learn on the fly.
Strategic thinking beats task execution. It’s not just what you do—it’s how you connect the dots.
Human-centered leadership is non-negotiable. The ability to listen, influence, and build trust matters more than ever.
Self-driven learning is the new baseline. Waiting for your employer to train you? You’re already behind.
How to Start Building These Skills Now
You don’t need to overhaul your career.
You just need to build intentionally.
Here’s where to start:
Practice Resilience and Agility 🏃♀️
Stop waiting for things to “go back to normal.”Instead, ask: What did I learn from this pivot? How did I adapt?
Make reflection and recovery part of your rhythm—not just your response to burnout.
Become a Lifelong Learner (On Your Terms) 📚️
Pick one area you’re curious about—AI, leadership, storytelling, customer experience.
Set aside 20 minutes a week to learn.
Small habits compound.Strengthen Your Human Skills 💪
Listening, conflict navigation, feedback conversations—these are differentiators.
Try this: in your next meeting, focus on what’s not being said.
That’s where the real skill shows up.Learn the Language of Tech 💻️
You don’t have to become a data scientist.
But knowing how tools like AI and automation impact your work? That’s power.
Start with context—not code.
The Skill That Will Always Matter Most…
Self-Advocacy.
It’s the skill that never goes out of style.
It’s how you name your strengths, show your impact, and communicate your value.
It’s not about being loud.
It’s about being clear.
“Here’s how I can help. Here’s the proof. Here’s why it matters.”
The people who can grow their skills and tell their story?
They’re the ones shaping the future—not waiting for it to happen to them.
AI Recruiting Agents Are Here: What You Need to Know (and How to Stay Ahead)
If you’ve been job searching recently, you may have noticed something new.
It’s not just hiring managers reviewing your profile anymore… It’s AI recruiting agents.
Platforms like Juicebox are changing how companies source, screen, and match candidates—often before a human even sees your resume.
Whether you’re actively looking or just future-proofing, it’s worth knowing what these tools do—and how to stand out in a search powered by algorithms.
What Is an AI Recruiting Agent?
Think of it like a digital recruiter.
Tools like Juicebox let companies upload open roles and job descriptions. Then AI “agents” go out and proactively search databases like LinkedIn for candidates who fit.
It’s matchmaking at scale.
Fast. Automated. Data-driven.
AI surfaces candidates. Humans still hire them.
That means your resume, LinkedIn profile, and interview presence still matter deeply. The algorithm may get you in the door, but you need to walk through it.
What AI Agents Are Really Looking For
To stand out, you need to understand what’s driving the match. Most platforms scan for:
Keywords & Skills
✅ Match the job description’s language. Keywords are everything.✅ Include both hard skills (like Python) and soft skills (like leadership)
Career Trajectory
✅ Consistent growth or role progression✅ Job titles that signal scope and seniority
Location & Preferences
✅ Some filters screen by region or hybrid/remote availability
Online Presence
✅ A strong LinkedIn profile boosts visibility
✅ Bonus: portfolios, websites, or press mentions = extra contextResponsiveness
✅ Some tools even track how quickly you reply
✅ Being fast = being favored
How to Stay Competitive
Here’s what you can do today: 😉
→ Optimize LinkedIn (Seriously)
Use keywords from your target roles in your headline, About section, and job entries. Clear = searchable. Jargon = invisible.
→ Be Clear, Not Clever
AI won’t decode “Marketing Rockstar” or “People Ops Ninja.”
Use clean, recognizable titles that reflect your actual role.
→ Lead with Results
AI rewards impact. Quantify what you’ve achieved: increased revenue, improved processes, launched something new.
Make it easy to spot your value.
→ Respond Quickly
Recruiters using tools like Juicebox can move fast.
Set alerts, reply quickly, and keep your materials fresh.
The Bottom Line:
AI can help you get discovered.
But your clarity, positioning, and proof of impact? That’s what gets you hired.
You already have the experience.
Make sure the systems can see it.
What, So What, Now What
A Simple Framework for Meaningful Reflection
This model helps you make sense of experiences, especially complex or challenging ones, by breaking them into three parts:
So What?
Why does it matter?
Reflect on the impact, consequences, or meaning. What did you learn? What shifted?
Example: “It exposed communication gaps between our teams and impacted client trust.”
Now What?
What will you do differently next time?
Identify the action steps, mindset shift, or change in approach you’ll make moving forward.
Example: “I’ll implement a mid-week status check to catch blockers early.”
When to Use It:
After a project, failure, or success (to extract insight) 🪶
In interviews (to structure PAR-style responses with depth) 💡
In coaching (to guide growth-oriented conversations) 🧢
In check-ins with your manager to quickly frame complex topics ✔️
For self-awareness (especially after feedback or emotional moments) 🪞
It’s simple, powerful, and flexible—and it helps you turn experience into growth, fast. 💫
